For the second year in a row Melbourne design agency 21-19 are design partners of the 2010 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
The 2010 festival identity was a response to the festival theme: ‘stepping out of (musical) time and into space’. The resulting keyart image was a play on this idea - where notes and stave live freely, mutually dependant upon one another but at the same time masters of their own direction.
Taking the concept even further, The Pieces In Between is an immersive sound and light installation, set up at Federation Square for the duration of the festival. As a piece of music is played (a new composition from The Necks’ pianist Chris Abrahams), colours will emerge brightly as sound takes on a visual presence that engages both senses.
A large motivation for this year’s identity was to position the festival with a contemporary voice. By adapting a traditional musical analogy 21-19 found a parallel with the festivals theme and produced a contemporary aesthetic that sits uniquely in the local Festival landscape.
