Pencil this in your diary, two conjoint exhibitions not to be missed!!!
‘A Singular Talent: George Ingham Designer Maker - a retrospective (1982 – 2003)’
“As a teacher, George evolved a clearly different pedagogy whose substance and architecture has served as the basis for other courses across Australia. However, no one else delivered quite as he did it….. European cabinet making skills set into a sense of a Japanese dojo-like space. He set in place in his teaching and making practice the ambition to create furniture that would stand outside of time….. distinctive, but ageless and serene.
George made the chair his design piece de resistance: the art of creating a chair is not the creation of art, but it is about creating a chair’s reasonableness. This is its usefulness and its proportions….. derived primarily from the size of the human body and the structural limits of the material. A good chair in its proportions states a sort of visual reasonableness.
It’s a highly charged thing, a chair. It seemed the perfect window by which to look forward and look back.”
‘Chairs of the Alumni - the ongoing narrative’
“From the genres of furniture, the chair seemed the perfect brief to ask of an alumni of George Ingham….. to have them examine connections between their lived and formative experiences: between comparative youth, influences, and now maturity. Consciously or unconsciously these designer/makers are asking some big questions: the act of designing and making their chairs is at once intensely private, but also in the realized chairs, explicitly public. The chair they make will probably be “the materialisation of an idea” ….. it will carry the aspirations to be this in the material of the chair itself.”
