Last month, in August 9-16, Australia’s leading design studios transformed an inner-city Sydney laneway into an inspiring, outdoor exhibition with the theme of “Humanity/Equality”, as part of Sydney Design 09.

The project, EyeSaw is an annual event that invites the country’s top graphic designers to create and install a piece of visual communication on the walls of Omnibus Lane. The designers were invited to respond to the theme “Humanity/Equality” and to design from the heart. The intention was to garner the most emotive results possible to engage the public and move them through the power of graphic design.

EyeSaw demonstrates the power of intelligent and thoughtful design and is backed by the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA). A detailed catalogue will be published to commemorate the ephemeral work from the exhibition.

Highlights of EyeSaw this year included a poignant contribution involving the Israel/Palestine separation barrier that saw a part of the Gaza Strip brought to Sydney; a typographic commentary on the nature of racial and social stereotyping made from office labels; a piece on the power of empathy by renowned book designer Jenny Grigg, and a surprising tribute to an iconic piece of graphic design which has achieved more in the field of human rights than almost any other symbol in history.

“This is the third time the EyeSaw event has been held and our ambition this year with the chosen theme was to create an exhibition that is both moving in terms of its emotional humanitarian content, as well as inspirational in terms of the design quality on display,” said Mark Gowing, curator of EyeSaw.

“Senior creatives from the top studios across the country have clearly been working from the heart and the results are reverent, smart and nothing short of stunning.”
